Voices United is my current leading choice for a North American Reformed congregational hymnal if I had to go out and buy new ones. I'll be interested to see the results of the CRC/RCA collaboration, though I guess I'm not being invited to participate.James Brummhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02670250095165980708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33440633.post-71759497960530995872008-01-28T11:44:00.000-05:002008-01-28T11:44:00.000-05:00Thanks JB, I'm very honored, because I know how hi...Thanks JB, I'm very honored, because I know how high your standards are.

It has been a very interesting exercise for me, to go about this kind of homiletical hermenuetic. It's somewhere in between exegetical preaching and topical prreaching, this going to the text each week with a specific agenda and asking what the texts might have to say to that agenda.

Of course, it's always what we do on holidays and funerals and weddings.

It assumes a sort of "oraculur" approach to scripture, which approach has clear and present dangers. The ideal Reformed approach is always to let the text speak for itself.

But of course, that's well nigh impossible, and perhaps a little disingenuous, if not dishonest. We always come with our agnendas to the text, we can't help it, we're meant to. What else is Catechetical Preaching, after all? So perhaps this is one way about being up front about my agenda.

DJM

PS, this week we sang the metrical version of Psalm 27 from Rejoice. A very unfamiliar tune, Christus der ist mein Leben. But quite remarkably easy for the congregation to sing, with its ladder-step composition.Old Firsthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02450204955608047437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33440633.post-35091994139057463432008-01-27T22:11:00.000-05:002008-01-27T22:11:00.000-05:00Wow. Two great sermons, I really like the ones I preached last week and this, and I believe they were what God wanted me to preach, but part of me wishes I could have preached these. I'm glad you did, Daniel.

By the way, the line "Will you seek the face of God with me?" is going into my notebook, and may grow into a hymn. I'll let you know.James Brummhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02670250095165980708noreply@blogger.com
